Roberto Ascione stands out as one of the defining global leaders of the digital health revolution, bridging medicine, technology, and entrepreneurship to shape how patients, clinicians, and health systems experience care worldwide. Over more than two decades, he has built and invested in several companies, convened ecosystems, and authored a roadmap for the future of health that many innovators now follow.

Roberto Ascione’s early life and education

Roberto Ascione was born in Naples, Italy, on 9 August 1973, and grew up in a family that encouraged both scientific curiosity and an early interest in technology, computer science, and design. Coincidently, his own father was a medical doctor who took him and his siblings to London every summer in a campervan where they would spend quite a lot of time outside of the hospital. It goes without saying that Ascione’s proximity to the medical world started at a very young age; mainly while on family road trips, spending quality time with his loved ones as a child.

Arguably, being exposed to his father practicing medicine across borders within Europe at such an early age may have planted an everlasting seed for his own journey as he also would eventually be trained as a medical doctor. Initially enrolling in medical school, Ascione ultimately caught the entrepreneurship bug and courageously chose to pursue an entrepreneurial path at the intersection of medicine, computer science and human–technology interaction.

However, he later earned a Degree in Communication Sciences, combining formal training in marketing and communications with his medical background. Consequently, this mix of disciplines built the strategic foundation that would later on empower him to influence the future of health on a global scale through pioneering endeavors in digital health innovation, notably founding Frontiers Health in 2015, one of the premier global health innovation events with 10 global editions and numerous local gatherings around the world.

From medical training to global digital health pioneer

Trained as a medical doctor and in marketing and communications, Ascione fused clinical thinking with design, software, and human–technology interaction at a time when healthcare was still largely analog. His early conviction was simple but radical: digital innovation would become one of the most powerful drivers of change in healthcare, improving outcomes while expanding access.

Even though he was still very young, it became irrefutably evident that his early passion for technology as a curious teenager had turned into a valuable asset when he began his entrepreneurial journey. But something was missing in order to make his vision for both technology and science a concrete reality was acquiring some tangible expertise in a scientific domain, which is why he eventually attended medical school. In his conversation with EU Startup News at the 10th anniversary of Frontiers Health in Berlin, he stated;

“To start at the beginning, I started as a medical doctor, indeed. I never finished despite being already at the hospital, close to the end (of medical studies) because I meanwhile started a first company, you would say ‘startup’ today. The reason why I started this company is because my vision and dream at that age was to really combine digital technologies and medicine. And I went to medical school with the idea to really understand the domain with an insight and apply it to coding, which I was doing by passion already in my high school days.” – Roberto Ascione

Motivated by this insight, he devoted his career to advancing digital healthcare long before it became a mainstream priority for health systems and life sciences organizations. He founded one of the earliest companies to make “digital health” more than a concept, shaping an industry that would transform lives.

Building Healthware into a global platform

In 1997, Ascione founded Healthware Group, a health innovation and technology company focused on transforming how life sciences organizations, payers, and providers connect with patients and professionals. Under his leadership, Healthware evolved into a global advisory and technology partner supporting commercial, medical, and R&D operations for pharma, biotech, and digital health companies.

Fast-forward to 2023, Healthware’s integration into EVERSANA further amplified that impact, with Ascione serving as President of Health Innovation, to drive scalable, tech‑enabled solutions around the world. The combined platform reflects his long‑held view that digital is no longer an add‑on, but a core operating system for modern healthcare. This powerful strategic business move was not just a game-changer for the healthcare industry at large, but also, it undoubtedly positioned Roberto Ascione de facto as one of the most influential leaders in the digital health space worldwide.

Architect of the digital health ecosystem

Beyond building a single company, Ascione has deliberately acted as an ecosystem architect, connecting entrepreneurs, investors, and incumbents around a shared vision of innovation. For instance, as an active investor, he told EU Startup News;

“I am also an investor, a venture builder, actually. With a portfolio of nearly 20 startups, all in digital health in Europe and in the United States (but primarily Europe) through Future Health Ventures, of which I am CEO.”

In fact, he is the founder and Chairman of the Frontiers Health Global Conference, which was founded in 2015 and therefore celebrated its 10th anniversary this year in Berlin, Germany. Frontiers Health is now globally recognized as one of the leading international platforms for digital health and health innovation stakeholders, focusing strongly on digital therapies, breakthrough technologies, healthcare transformation, investments, and ecosystem development.

He also helped shape the emerging field of digital therapeutics as a founding advisor of the Digital Therapeutics Alliance, supporting the maturation of standards and business models in this fast‑growing category. Through Future Health Ventures (formerly Healthware Ventures), he backs early‑stage companies working in areas such as advanced telehealth, remote care, digital medical devices, and digital therapeutics, translating vision into tangible products and services.

Looking ahead, Ascione continues to drive European health innovation. After serving as Vice President, this year he will take on the role of President of the Tech Tour Growth Health event — a leading platform supporting Europe’s most promising innovators in Digital Health and Medtech.

Thought leadership and “The Future of Health”

Ascione’s influence extends into ideas, not just organizations, with his book The Future of Health offering a comprehensive overview of how digital technologies are reshaping care delivery across the patient journey. Published in both Italian and English, the book serves as a practical guide for executives, clinicians, policymakers, and entrepreneurs navigating this transformation.

Furthermore, he regularly shares this vision through his keynote “Towards a Digital Health Future,” where he explores themes such as digital therapeutics, AI, virtual reality, and remote monitoring as new pillars of medicine.

From global industry stages like Webit, MWC, Wired Health, HIMSS, HIMSS | Health 2.0, Startup Health Festival, Tech Tour, the Global Entrepreneurship Congress, TEDx and others, he consistently frames digital health not as technology for its own sake, but as a means to deliver more human, equitable, and sustainable care.

As a matter of fact, here is what Richard Saul Wurman, the creator of TED, TEDMED and Understanding Healthcare had to say about Ascione’s book “The Future of Health”;

“Everybody has a doctor’s story. Everybody has a story of the lack of clarity of explanation. Roberto Ascione in this timely vision clarifies the necessity for the embrace with NEXT. It is an explanation narrative of the highest order.” – Richard Saul Wurman, the creator of TED

Recognitions that reflect global impact

Ascione’s leadership has been recognized repeatedly by industry peers, underscoring his role as a global reference point for digital health strategy and execution. He has been named among the 100 Most Inspiring People by PharmaVOICE and honored at the PM360 ELITE Awards as a Transformational Leader, as well as receiving a Decade’s Best Industry Leader recognition from the Health 2.0 community.

These accolades mirror his ongoing work as an advisor to companies, start‑ups, and investors across Europe and the United States, where he helps shape strategies at the intersection of science, technology, and user experience. For many emerging founders and established executives, he is both a mentor and a benchmark for what long‑term, values‑driven leadership in digital health looks like.

A patient‑centric vision for the next decade

Looking ahead, Ascione champions a model of healthcare in which digital therapeutics, AI, wearables, and virtual care converge to create continuous, personalized, and prevention‑oriented health experiences. He emphasizes that technologies such as remote monitoring, digital triage, and mental health platforms are not distant concepts but rapidly scaling realities, accelerated by demographic shifts and the lessons of the COVID‑19 era.

In light of all his professional achievements over the last two decades, we can conclude that his vision keeps patients and clinicians at the center, insisting that innovation must translate into better outcomes, reduced access gaps, and more sustainable systems. In this sense, Roberto Ascione is not only narrating the future of health—he is proactively building it, making him one of the most influential global leaders in digital health today.
